MOPA- to deepen constitutional awareness
MOPA continues to support an initiative by a group of young people in Kibera to increase and deepen constitutional awareness in the community and among young adults in high schools. The Tujue Katiba Initiative (TKI) has so far formed a Youth Katiba Club in Kianda
Village with 30 young people who meet frequently to discuss key
governance and democracy issues as provided in the constitution,
including on rights and obligations, social justice, elections,
leadership and integrity. The Schools Outreach programme has so far been launched at the Maono Education Centre, Mashimoni Sq, and Kibra Academy.
In the month of November, this constitutional outreach covered three
schools, reaching a total of 203 high school students. In addition to
120 copies of the pocket-size constitution, MOPA
has also provided relevant resources and materials on governance,
anti-corruption and accountability. This relationship comes out of our
successful grassroots network mapping exercise, and a follow up Nairobi
County networks roundtable in July and September 2011 respectively, in
which MOPA sought
to identify, support and strengthen well organized groups or individuals
already involved in democracy and accountability initiatives at the
grassroots level. As more resources become available, MOPA
will continue to strengthen the capacity of such groups to deliver on
the promise of democratic transformation from below. Other undertakings
by the group include community-based civic education in preparation for
2012 general elections, leadership development, as well asd weekly constitutional radio programme.
